When it comes to next-gen console hardware, everything is so entirely up in the air right now. Sure, we have some specs, a controller here, a big box there, but all we’ve been served so far are pre-rendered trailers and little fanfare. We don’t actually know a whole lot about how games will look and feel.
And maybe this demo from Unreal demonstrating the might of Unreal Engine 5 (coming 2021) isn’t any different, but it sure as hell feels a whole lot more like a proper game demo.
The name of demo, Lumen in the Land of Nanite, plays off of one of Unreal Engine 5’s new core technologies relating to lighting. Or as the smart people would say, “a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes”. The other technology key to what I’m sure will be UE5’s success, is called Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry and I dare you to say that 5 times in a row real fast. What does it do? It “frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see”.
But enough with the techno babble, let’s watch a really pretty demo running on a PlayStation 5. It starts proper at 2:50, but the lead up to that is quite interesting as well.
