Ubisoft just held E3’s finest keynote so far, and wrapped the whole thing up with a tear-y eyed Michel Ancel and the announcement of Beyond Good and Evil 2, along with a cinematic trailer. It is extremely early on, which is made ever so clear with the news that people across the world can sign up for the Space Monkey Program, in which they can influence and follow the development of the game. They are using an in-house engine built by Ubisoft Montpellier, but other than that I’m not sure there’s a lot more to the game yet. There is being shown gameplay behind closed doors at E3, so a vertical slice is at least available.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 is a prequel to the first game, set in System 3 during the 24th century. Information tells of online features and the ability to play alone or with friends. Open worlds, planets and exploration seems to be the emphasis.
Whatever it ends up being, I hope it retains the mood set up by the trailer, because this looks like a fun space opera. For videos, artwork and more information, check out the game page.
