If there’s one (actually, there’s several) franchise that needs to break off the annual release schedule, it’s Assassin’s Creed. And ‘lo and behold they have heard the people. Based on feedback from Unity (a game which was at least 3 kinds of terrible), they have decided to take a step back and “re-examine the Assassin’s Creed franchise”. A wise choice if I may say so.
These games are huge time sinks if you decide to really get involved with everything they offer. So much so that when you’re actually done with a game fatigue sets in and then they announce a new one. And sure, I don’t have to play each one, but I also don’t want to miss out on the talk, the (sometimes great) story beats and the quite frankly amazing world building they have come to offer. It took months before I even wanted to start Unity and when I did I was treated to a poorly executed adventure. Which brings me to the second reason this is a good decision: Bugs, glitches and sub-par stories. Playing an Assassin’s Creed game has in recent years been like playing a slot machine; sometimes you win and sometimes you just make a lousy investment of your money.
Now I’ll just look forward to the movie instead, and wait for the inevitable Kotaku leak for whatever the next game is – but much later.
