Insomniac Games brings 4-person co-op action with Fuse

So you have probably heard about Overstrike, announced as multi-platform by Insomniac Games at E3 2011. It had a nice looking logo, a really funny CGI teaser trailer with goofy characters and things looked at least from the outside to go swimmingly.

Well scratch all that, the game is now called Fuse and by the looks of the first few screenshots the comic Team Fortress-y style is toned down and behind the scenes the game went from sneak-em-up to full blown action. Hmm… Resident Evil and Dead Space comes to mind, in which a similar more mainstream (action oriented) approach to the game-play was developed. One can argue that maybe this type of game-play is simple more fun, but I think there should still be a place for the slower, more methodical way of tackling these kinds of games.

I don’t think we should be too worried though, playing through Resistance 3 again recently made me remember how super well crafted yet underappreciated that game really is. And with the lessons learned from Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One I think we’re in for a high-quality AND fun experience.

Founder and CEO, Ted Price, over at Insomniac Games describes the game like this:

“Fuse demonstrates what Insomniac does best: outlandish and gruesome weapons design, over-the-top action and a touch of humor. We’re especially excited to see how players utilize lethal teamwork by combining their Fuse weapons to stop a deadly arms race.”

Fuse is a 4-person co-op, story-driven, action game but you can actually play the campain solo if you so choose. With the nifty feature called LEAP you can hop from one character in the game to the next with ease and enjoy different skills and weapons. Using teamwork though, players can complete objectives and kills similar to All 4 One. The game’s progression system is unified between different play modes, allowing players to continue improving their agents regardless of what they play.

How about a short synopsis to wrap things up. In Fuse, the members of contact team Overstrike 9 attempt to thwart a rogue paramilitary organization called Raven from stealing the Fuse source located deep within a classified government facility. Overstrike 9’s pursuit of Raven will take them around the world, from the fortified desert facility to underwater bases, island strongholds, icy mountain peaks, palatial hideouts and beyond. Later, as the team closes in on Raven, another more sinister enemy reveals itself as a truly horrendous global threat.

What do you think about Insomniac Games going multi-platform and releasing Fuse through EA? It will be out in March 2013, check out the teaser trailer and the new screenshots here.
